This is the Uni-ball Jetstream Retractable Rollerball Hybrid Ink Pen. The first pen to feature a hybrid ink.
The body of the pen has a smokey gray translucent look while mostly covered by the pen’s clip section that’s inserted inside. The clip is quite normal it says what line width the pen is. The clicker for the pen represents the ink color of the pen. The grip on the Jetstream is a soft touch rubbery grip that has a slight increase in width and has ridges embeded into it. It is a good grip for both right and left handed users.
This is the most common Jetstream pen. This retractable version with the smokey translucent body comes in black, red and blue. This model is also available in 0.38mm, 0.5, and 0.7mm point sizes.
The pen measures 13.8cm or 5.5 inches. It’s at the shorter end of average size pens.
You’d think that pen technology wouldn’t need any more advancements since they created the gel ink pen but Uni-ball proves that there can still be some developments to be made. That’s where the Jetstream line comes in. The Jetstream pens features uni-ball’s unique hybrid ink. Featuring the smoothness of an oil-based ballpoint ink combined with the vibrancy of a gel ink pen further improved by developing it with uni-ball’s own Super Ink pigmentation that provides waterproofness and fade-proofness to the hybrid ink.
Well test out how well the hybrid ink compares to both a gel ink and an oil-based ball point. But first a writing sample.
The Jetstream lays down a bold dark line on the downstrokes but has a tiny bit of skipping at the start. There are no ink blobs made that’s good for left handed writers. As for smoothness it is very smooth. Smoother than a regular ballpoint. The tip size might have helped since thicker lines are smoother but it just glides on the paper. Not even a hint of scratchiness. Oop there’s still some skipping on that downstroke. But it is very vibrant aside from the skips.
As for the line thickness this is shown as having 1.0mm width but compared to my sample here it is a hair breath thinner than 1.0mm at 0.9mm
Uni-ball has also claimed that along with it’s smoothness the hybrid ink of the Jetstream dries 9x faster than a standard ballpoint ink. I agree with this claim as even just after writing a single character the ink doesn’t smudge. This is perfect for lefties to use.
Finally we have our waterproof test. We dab a bit of water on the ink and let it sink. Wow! Uni-ball’s super ink is on form. It is water proof with no ink wash made unlike regular gel ink pens. There are also no details lost and the ink stays on the paper. This is very waterproof. Perfect for those all-weather conditions.
If you want a super smooth writing waterproof pen in a retractable body with a soft touch grip then the Uniball Jetstream is the perfect pen for you. Just pick one with a thinner line width as the 1.0mm tip size can skip a lot.
